About Our Utopia
The theme of our Utopia focuses on Mohist School. Our Utopia will have a central building of modern Chinese style. We want to create a new version of traditional Chinese palace. And if we have extra time, we will build other architecture around it. The goals and fundamental values of our Utopia come from Mozi. We want to promote Mozi’s idea of universal love and non-offensive. We love peace. Therefore, when dealing with people who harm others, we will simply banish them. Because we want to promote Mozi’s ideology to foreigners, our game for foreigner students will also focus on Mohist School. We will probably design a treasure-hunting game for them. It will contain quiz about Mozi’s idea and Chinese culture. Hope they can get a better understanding from this project.

Second Life-2

We do a lot of activities this time. First, we go shopping. In the gallery we can find all kinds of dress, shoes, accessory, hair styles, eyes... And most of them are free! I buy nearly every free item so I can have choices later. After adjustment, my role is completely different right now. She has gold twin tails. She wears a cute baby blue dress and a pair of shining silver high-heeled. After the makeover, we start to visit new spots. We visit the bell tower. Our group decide to gather on the top of the bell tower and do the movement at the same.(first photo) Then we visit the Wating Cafe. (second photo) We also visit the property that the students before created. I really love the red Tori created by a student who is Japanese culture fan. (third photo) I am a big fan of Japan as well:D We also learn how to take pictures today. By clicking the camera mark on the left side, we can capture the moment and save it to the disk. We also learn how to shoot in different angles. For examble, we can shoot in a close-range view or a long-ranged view. We can shoot the front of the roles and the side of the role as well.

Question: How do we promote L2 learners' creative use of the complex media for multi-layered aspects of play?

Our group has summed up four promoting ways in different aspects. The first is that teachers can leave some time in the end of the class that students can express their feedbacks to teachers. So when students have question, they can just ask teacher. This kind of two-way communication may enhance the deep of students' thoughts. The second point is about technique and skills. It is important for teachers to provide students with some sort of advance software like Java-script or c++. Teacher should also teach student to use online resources like language translator. So language will no longer be a barrier for L2 students. The third is that we can also afford money as a reward to stimulate second language learners to try to use their creativity in language learning. Money can be a strong incentive. The last one is providing learners a comfortable environment. This includes a comfortable room and some equipment like computers, free wifi, comfortable chairs… These equipments let them can enjoy learning.

Second Life-1

This is my first time to use Second Life. Our group has four members. Robert, Perlie, Sunnie, and me, Tiffany. My role in second life is Tiffany0207. She is a white woman. She has black long hair, brown eyes and white skin. She wears a white shirt, black jacket and a pair of jeans. All the new born characters appear at the beach of the island of beginner. There are white sand, blue sea ,some rocks and trees. We find that the roles can do some movemonets, including waving and all kinds of funny dancing. So we all do funny movements to each other. Then I start to explore this virtual world, controlling my role to move forward. She can walk as well as fly. By pressing Page Up twice she can jump to the air and start to fly. It is very interesting to have a bird's-eye view of the island and sea. Besides controlling the roles, we also learn other functions such as teleport and call. It takes some time to get familiar with all these functions.

Question1: What are new strategies, skills, and abilities needed to interact with text on the Internet?
Our conclusion is that it is important to have the ability to type in English quickly so one can chat with others on the net. But for people who can't type quickly they may also use Skype and just talk directly. And we can use videos and images to accompany with our spoken English so that people can understand easier.

Question2: How can reading processes be supported by new and varied forms of moblie technology?
We think that new mobile technology like Ipod enables us to save thousands of hundreds of electronic books in it instead of bring a lot of heavy books at the same time. We can just bring an Ipod. And there are lots of apps for Ebooks. Some of them can read out the text for you so you don’t have to look at the text and you can just listen to it. Also some mobile technology can translate the foreign text into Chinese so we can read other countries’ websites’ information as well. Last but least, thanks to mobile technology, readers don’t have to wear glasses because they can just use fingers to enlarge the words.
